Why Classical Lutheran education?

Why Classical?

Many analogies have been used to describe education today. Rollercoasters, oceans, deserts, and other images are employed to describe the great amassment of theories and strategies used to teach students. Most of us have little good to say about progressive education. Children are at best learning a lot of "stuff." But can they think critically and creatively?

Classical education gets to the heart of what it is to teach and learn. A classical curriculum has as its core goal, in the words of Dorothy Sayers, "the proper training of the mind to encounter and deal with the formidable mass of undigested problems presented to it by the modern world. For the tools of learning are the same, in any and every subject; and the person who knows how to use them will, at any age, get the mastery of a new subject in half the time and with a quarter of the effort expended by the person who has not the tools at his command. To learn six subjects without remembering how they were learnt does nothing to ease the approach to a seventh; to have learnt and remembered the art of learning makes the approach to every subject an open door."

Why Lutheran?

There are certainly other options when it comes to completely online classical education for your child. Yet none of them are grounded in Lutheran theology... until now. We believe, teach, and confess Christ alone and Him crucified.

As if that wasn't enough, Lutherans have an incredibly rich heritage when it comes to educating children. This very history was the inspiration for our name, Wittenberg Academy. It is in Wittenberg that Luther battled for quality liberal arts education for all children, taught his children, and wrote many works from which we can learn about our duty to educate our children (among other things).

At Wittenberg Academy, we desire to extend the heritage of providing excellent Lutheran education for today's students. We want parents to be confident that our curriculum is solidly grounded not only in the Word of God, but also in the Lutheran Confessions. We strive, in partnership with you, to prepare your child to live not only in the Kingdom of the Left, but also in the Kingdom of the Right. We believe, with Luther, Walther, and other church fathers, that classical liberal arts, partnered with catechesis, is the best way to prepare our children for life in both Kingdoms.

Why Online?

An online format allows much freedom and many benefits for students and their families.

First, offering online classes allows us to gather together an incredibly talented and dedicated staff from all over the country.

Second, online classes allow students and families flexibility in day-to-day scheduling.

Third, we can offer class sizes that are small enough for each student to have a voice, but large enough that students can interact with and learn from one another. (Click here to read more specifics about online learning at Wittenberg Academy)
